Can you tell me more about your organisation? What is a domain name?
A domain name is a unique address on the Internet, like GBwebs.co.uk. It is used to access
information from websites and webpages like this one.
What would I get from a domain name?
A domain name gives you lots of facilities. As well as your own unique address on
the internet from which you can host a website you can also have personalised email
addresses e.g you@yourdomain.com.
How do I buy a domain name?
You can only register a domain name. A small number of authorised companies (known as
registrars) actually allocate domains names for use. GBwebs acquires domain names on your
behalf. See our pricing here.
Can I go straight to a domain registrar?
Yes you could, however this would be uneconomical. Registrars charge high annual
membership fees, which which means you would have to acquire a very large number of
domains.
Who 'owns (controls) the domain names I register?
GBwebs will register domains in your name, but you can also specify another name if you
wish. As the registrant you have control of your domains.
I've registered a domain what do I do next?
After registering a domain name you will most likely need to find someone to host it for
you. A host will provide the servers to give your domain a website (e.g
www.yourdomainname.co.uk), email addresses (e.g you@yourdomainname.co.uk), and other
services.
If you don't want run a website from it we provide the following free
services:
- 5 POP3 mailboxes
- Web forwarding
- Hosting (holding page)
- Email forwarding
- Submitter
- 5 autoresponders
- Web based control panel for easy configuration. Learn more..
How do I choose my domain name?
First decide what you need the domain name for, and then try choose a relevant, memorable
or catchy name (e.g. yourbusinessname.com). Top level domains (TLD's): end in .com, .org
and .net and UK domain names: end with .co.uk, .org.uk, .plc.uk and .ltd.uk. We
recommend that you register both TLD and UK extensions to prevent potential visitors to
your domain name confusing you with anyone else, which may happen if someone purchases the
available extensions at a later date. More tips
